The Association underwent incorporation in 1986 and adopted a constitution which provides a legal framework for its activities. Over the past 30+ years, a range of innovative services have been developed that not only respond to the needs of people with Brain Disorders, but have set new standards for other services. Launching these new services into visibility also resulted in improved community awareness, and stronger community and departmental alliances. In 2010 The Association agreed to change its name to Synapse (click here for an explanation of the term). This process was not undertaken lightly, with a Communications Audit and extensive engagement across all members and stakeholders. We believe Synapse is a name that is both positive and suggests the value of relationships rather than a label for an injury. For us, Synapse relates to the connections between people, communities and opportunities. Though the name changed, our mission and values have stayed the same. We remain dedicated to reconnecting the lives of those affected by Brain Disorders.
