Its a No-Brainer - Mind Your Head

Hats off to the beanie!

The humble headgear, in an optimistic shade of sky blue, has been elevated into a symbol of the importance of protecting our brains from damaging accidents.

Bang on a Beanie is the motto in a national campaign to get people thinking about the subject for Brain Injury Awareness Week, which began on Monday. Its theme this year is sports-related injury.

Byron Bay's Wendi Evans is someone who knows all about the devastation a brain injury can cause.

She was cycling in Jonson St in 2008 when her front wheel hit an obstacle and she was thrown headfirst onto some large stones. Wendi was wearing a helmet, which she says probably saved her life, but suffered bleeding in the brain. She seemed to come right quite quickly and was soon back at work as a counsellor in the Liver Clinic. But she suffered giddy spells and memory lapses and was generally far from her old efficient self.
