Real Heroes Walk Away

An in-depth investigation has also identified that at least 20 people have died following "king hits'' in the past seven years.

In an effort to reduce the human toll, today News Limited expands its Real Heroes Walk Away campaign.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott have joined with family members of those killed to plead for a change in behaviour.

Surgeons, sports legends and celebrities are also urging a shift in attitude. "This has to stop,'' said Dr Anthony Lynham, who specialises in repairing smashed skulls and confronted nearly 400 cases last year. "You've got to put me out of business,'' Dr Lynham said.

Neurosurgeon Dr Rodney Allan said too many patients are presenting with severely damaged brains from a single punch.

"People do hit each other harder nowadays,'' Dr Allan said. "Even after a single punch, if you do an MRI scan you will see evidence of damage. A single punch is one too many. If the victim is young that is going to affect them for the rest of their lives.''
